WTAE Editorial: Juneteenth celebrations in Pittsburgh
FOUR. THIS IS A WTAE EDITORIAL SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD IS CHARLES W WOLFORD’S, PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF WTAE. WE KICKED OFF SUMMER BY HONORING OUR NATION’S MILITARY HEROES WITH MEMORIAL DAY. IN JUST A FEW WEEKS, WE’LL CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF OUR COUNTRY ON THE 4TH OF JULY. BUT THIS WEEK THERE’S A HOLIDAY WITH JUST AS MUCH HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE THAT CAN’T BE FORGOTTEN. JUNETEENTH. EVERY JUNE 19TH, JUNETEENTH CELEBRATES THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS YEAR WILL BE THE SECOND YEAR THAT JUNETEENTH WILL BE OBSERVED AS AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY IN THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH. ACROSS OUR REGION, THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF EVENTS ALL WEEKEND AND MONDAY, INCLUDING THE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA JUNETEENTH HOMECOMING CELEBRATION IN POINT STATE PARK AND MARKET SQUARE. LOG ON TO WTAE DOT COM FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ALL THE EVENTS. WE BELIEVE JUNETEENTH IS A HOLIDAY THAT SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AND SHOULD BE OBSERVED THROUGHOUT PENNSYLVANIA FOR ITS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND MARKING A MOMENT THAT ENDED A TERRIBLE WRONG. WT
