Aliquippa church focuses on feeding neighbors in need
THEM. HOUSE OF PRAYER HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON FOOD OUTREACH WITHIN THE ALIQUIPPA COMMUNITY FOR YEARS, AND THEIR MISSION HAS REALLY GROWN. AND NOW THEY’RE ROLLING OUT A NEW METHOD TO HELP PEOPLE MISS FAITH. PEOPLE WERE CALLED TO MAKE A CHANGE IN THE WORLD AND TO CARE FOR OUR NEIGHBOR, LOVE GOD, LOVE NEIGHBOR. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT. WHEN PASTOR MICHAEL WINE FIRST ARRIVED AT HOUSE OF PRAYER IN ALIQUIPPA MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, HE NEVER THOUGHT A FOOD TRUCK WOULD BE A PART OF HIS MISSION AND MESSAGE. THE NEED IS JUST SO OVERWHELMING AND IS AWESOME EVEN AS THIS IS LIKE WE NEED LIKE 5 OR 6 OF THEM HERE IN ALIQUIPPA TO REALLY LIKE ADDRESS THE FOOD SCARCITY THAT FOLKS EXPERIENCE. THE CHURCH UNDER PASTOR SOUR WINES, LEADERSHIP HAS REALLY FOCUSED ON COMMUNITY OUTREACH, SPECIFICALLY FEEDING THE HUNGRY IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY SERVE A FREE MEAL EACH WEEK. THEY ALSO HAVE A FREE PANTRY AND REFRIGERATOR ON THE GROUNDS OF THE CHURCH. OUR FREE PANTRY MONTHLY GIVES ABOUT THREE TONS OF FOOD AWAY, SO ABOUT 6,000 POUNDS OF FOOD MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CHURCH EVERY SINGLE MONTH. AND THEIR NEWEST ADVENTURE RUNS ON FOUR WHEELS. A FOOD TRUCK MEANT TO HAND-DELIVER HELP TO THOSE IN NEED. WE RECOGNIZE THAT OUR COMMUNITY, LIKE THE LOCAL ONES, RIGHT AROUND THE FEW BLOCKS HERE, THEY CERTAINLY HAVE SOME NEED AND FOLKS COME REGULARLY. BUT THOSE IN THE GREATEST NEED IN THE TOWN HERE, THEY’RE NOT WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE. THE LITTLE FREE FOOD TRUCK IS STILL IN ITS EARLY STAGES, BUT THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO HAVE A DAILY SERVICE MEAL IN A DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOOD EACH DAY. NOT ONLY ARE THEY HOPEFUL THE FOOD TRUCK WILL HELP KEEP LOCAL FAMILIES WELL NOURISHED, BUT THEY’RE ALSO HOPING IT HELPS TO BUILD STRONG AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS, TOO. I HOPE OUR PROJECT HELPS PEOPLE RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTY THAT EXISTS RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO US IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN DO SO. THEY’RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS OR DONATIONS. IF YOU’D LIKE TO LEARN MORE, WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION AVAILABLE FOR YOU ON OUR WEBSITE AT WTAJ.
