SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD. HE’S CHARLES W. WOLFERTZ III PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF WTAE. IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS TO SCARY SITUATION, THINGS HAVE OCCURRED. THREE CALLS MADE TO POLICE ABOUT AN ACTIVE SHOOTER IN THE HILLMAN LIBRARY. FIRST RESPONDERS WERE ON THE SCENE IN UNDER 5 MINUTES. BUT STUDENTS DID NOT RECEIVE ONE OFFICIAL INCE MESSAGE FROM PITT UNTIL 82 MINUTES LATER. UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH POLICE CHIEF LOFTIS SHARED HIS THOUGHTS. MY REGRET AND MY RESPONSIBILITY IS THAT WE DIDN’T GET THE EMS MESSAGE OUT AS QUICKLY AS I FEEL WE COULD HAVE OR SHOULD HAVE. THE SECOND INCIDENT HAPPENED DURING A DEMONSTRATION. I JUST HEARD LIKE A --. AND HONESTLY, EVERYONE AT THE SHUTTLE STOP THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE AN ACTUAL BOMB. THANKFULLY, IT WASN’T. SHORTLY AFTER TROUBLE FIRST SURFACED. PITT MAKE GOOD USE OF THEIR NSA ALERT SYSTEM, SENDING OUT MANY ESSAGES, KEEPING STUDENTS INFORMED. WE BELIEVE TIME AND PREPAREDNESS SAVES LIVES. WE DON’T WAIT TO BUCKLE OUR SEATBELT UNTIL WE’RE SURE DANGER IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AND WE DON’T WAIT TO TELL PEOPLE THERE’S A CHANCE FOR TORNADOES UNTIL WE SEE THE FUNNEL CLOUD. OFFICIAL INFORMATION MUST BE RELEASED QUICKLY TO COMBAT MISINFORMED NATION THROUGH SOCIAL CHANNELS AND WORD OF MOUTH. BECAUSE WHEN THE THREAT IS REAL, IT WILL SAVE LIVES. WTAE WELCOMES RESPONSIBLE REPLIES TO THIS EDITORIAL.
