Blackhawks come into matchup against the Penguins on losing streak
SEE. I’M HERE TO WORK SO AND I ENJOY WHAT I DO SO IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER. YOU KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO? YOU KNOW, IT’S A GOOD THING. THIS CONVERSION CREW MEMBER DOESN’T MIND WHAT TASK HE’S ASSIGNED ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT. GOOD TO LET ME LOOSEN MY PURSE. ALL RIGHT. BECAUSE OVER THE COURSE OF OUR TIMES SPENT THERE DURING A SWITCHOVER FROM DUQUESNE BASKETBALL BACK TO HOCKEY, WE SAW HIM TAKING ON SEVERAL ROLES. IT IS ENTERTAINMENT. SO IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DO. THE BEST WAY I LIKE TO DESCRIBE IT IS WE DON’T LIKE TO GET NOTICED. EVERYTHING WE DO HAPPENS WHEN NOBODY’S IN THE BUILDING. MICHAEL STUBER IS DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS FOR PPR PAINTS ARENA. CONVERSIONS HAPPEN MOSTLY ON THE OVERNIGHT, USUALLY STARTING 11:00 AT NIGHT. WE’LL GO FROM ANYTHING FROM HOCKEY TO BASKETBALL. HOCKEY TO CONCERTS. THE NIGHT WE WERE THERE, THEY HAD TO TEAR DOWN FROM BASKETBALL AND GET READY FOR HOCKEY. THE NEXT MORNING, GOING FROM AN EVENT THE NIGHT BEFORE. WE’RE READY FOR A TYPICAL 7:00 HOCKEY GAME AT 7 A.M. THE HOCKEY TEAMS DO MORNING SKATES. THEY DO PRACTICES, WE DO ICE MAINTENANCE AND SUCH. THAT ENTAILS THE CREW WORKING OVERNIGHT TO TAKE DOWN ALL THE SIDES, CHAIRS AND BLEACHERS, ALL THE HOOPS, UNCOVER THE ICE, AND THEN BUILD IT BACK UP AND PUT THE SIDES WASHERS AND PLEXIGLASS BACK UP. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IT TAKES TO MAKE THAT MAGIC MASSIVE PRIZE, YOU KNOW, 20 PEOPLE MAKE ALL THAT HAPPEN. NOW THAT DOESN’T INCLUDE THE CLEANING AND SECURITY CREW. THAT WOULD EASILY ADD ANOTHER 50 MEMBERS. THIS IS JUST THE CREW ASSIGNED TO THE ACTUAL CONVERSION. THEY’RE LIKE ANY ANY SPORTS TEAM. 20 FOLKS HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER. THEY HAVE TO GET ALONG. TO WHETHER IT’S ONE PERSON LEADING THE CREW. IT’S GOT TWO OR THREE CAPTAINS UNDERNEATH THEM. AND THEN EVERYBODY HAS AN ASSIGNED JOB FOR THAT TIME PERIOD. SO THEY DO HAVE TO WORK AS A TEAM. IT’S VERY MUCH LIKE THE PENGUINS ITSELF. MY WAY TO THEY’RE DONE. YOU START TAKING ROUNDS AND GIVE THEM CHAIRS TO THE TWO DOUBLE SEATS. DEREK GORDON HAS BEEN AT THIS FOR OVER TEN YEARS. IT’S GREAT WORK. GOOD PEOPLE JUST LIKE THE OTHER CREW MEMBERS, HE SAYS. THE EVENT DICTATES WHAT HIS JOB WILL LOOK LIKE ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT. AND THIS IS A SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY, SO IT ALREADY FELT LIKE SOME SHOWS LATE SUNDAY NIGHT WHEN IT RUNS LATE, THAT PUTS US UNDER THE GUN. BUT, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES WE GOT TO WORK, SHORTEN OUR BREAK AND LUNCH. BUT JOB GET DONE. I MEAN, IF YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT I WAS GOING TO DO THIS OF, YOU KNOW, NO WAY. IN A MARK CASE SAYS THE GRUELING HOURS OF COFFEE HOUR ARE WORTH IT WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE PERKS OF THE JOB. SOMETIMES WE GET LIKE STAR STRUCK FROM SOME OF THE GUYS AND LIKE, SO THAT’S REALLY COOL. THIS YEAR PPG PAINTS ARENA WILL HOST OVER 40 PENS GAMES. AND DURING THAT SAME TIME, THERE ARE OVER TWO DOZEN CONCERTS AND SPECIAL EVENTS. NOW, AS FAR AS LISA’S QUESTION ABOUT THE ICE, ICE NEVER LEAVES. WE PUT THE ICE IN SEPTEMBER. THE ICE STAYS ALL THE WAY THROUGH A HOPEFUL STANLEY CUP FINISH IN JUNE. ISN’T THAT FASCINATING? THAT CREW REALLY WORKING HARD AND SOME CRAZY HOURS, TOO. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, LISA, FOR THE QUESTION. IF THERE IS A QUESTION I CAN GET ANSWERED FOR YOU AT HOME, LET ME KNOW. YOU CAN LEAVE ME A VOICE MESSAGE AT THE NUMBER ON YOUR SCREEN. FOUR. ONE, TWO, TWO, FOUR, FOUR, SIX, ONE OH. OR YOU CAN JUMP STRAIGHT IN. SEND ME A VIDEO MESSAGE. YOU CAN SEND THAT TO ME IN A FACEBOOK MESSAGE.
