Forecasting our Future: Pittsburgh hosts Global Clean Energy Action Forum
UNTIL THAT IS POSSIBLE, HYDROGEN IS GETTING A LOT OF ATTENTION. THIS WEEK, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED $7 BILLION WOULD GO TOWARDS BUILDING 10 HYDROGEN HUBS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THEY WOULD BE REAL WORLD LABORATORIES TO DEVELOP HYDROGEN AS A POWER SOURCE. >> THESE ARE LARGE-SCALE DEMONSTRATIONS. THEY WILL PROVE THE CONCEPT OF WHERE YOU BEGIN -- WHERE YOU CAN GET HYDROGEN FROM. ONE WILL BE A NATURAL GAS ONE. TO DO THIS, YOU HAVE TO CUT CARBON EMISSIONS. NATURAL GAS IS LESS POLLUTING THAN, BUT HAS CARBON IMMUNITY -- EMISSIONS. WHAT WILL YOU COME WITH -- TO US WITH THAT SHOWS YOU ARE CAPTURING CARBON AND SEQUESTERING IT, NOT HAVING IT GO INTO THE ATMOSPHERE? GETTING HYDROGEN FROM ZERO CARBON EMITTING SOURCES LIKE SOLAR, WIND, NUCLEAR. ALL OF THOSE ARE FEEDSTOCKS FOR THIS AMAZING NEXT GENERATION TECHNOLOGY. WE IN THE U.S. WILL BE LEADING THE WORLD IN PROVING IT. SHANNON: PITTSBURGH’S ACTION NEWS 4 HAS DONE REPORTING EXPLORING THE SCIENCE OF HYDROGEN POWER. YOU TAKE RAW MATERIAL, LIKELY NATURAL GAS, AND STRIP AWAY THE CARBON THAT IS POLLUTION. TOO MUCH OF THAT LEADS TO CLIMATE CHANGE. HYDROGEN HUBS WOULD BURY THE CARBON DEEP UNDERGROUND FOREVER. THEN YOU ARE LEFT WITH JUST HYDROGEN, AN ENERGY SOURCE TO POWER EVERYTHING FROM ELECTRICITY GRIDS TO YOUR FAMILY CAR. THE U.S. ENERGY SECRETARY JENNIFER GRANHOLM TOLD ME IN A ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW, CITIES ALL OVER AMERICA ARE TRYING TO GET ONE OF THOSE HYDROGEN HUBS, INCLUDING PITTSBURGH. >> YES, I AM AWARE. JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, THIS IS A COMPETITIVE PROCESS. WE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THE 7 BILLION FUND -- $7 BILLION FUNDING OPPORTUNITY. WE EXPECT UP TO 10 HYDROGEN HUBS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, BUT COMMUNITIES HAVE TO CEMENT REALLY COMPETITIVE PROPOSALS. IT IS PEER-REVIEWED. IT’S NOT CHOSEN FOR ANY OTHER REASON THAN MERIT. HOPEFULLY AS PITTSBURGH IS INTERESTED, THEY WILL SUBMIT A SLAMDUNK PROPOSAL. SHANNON: THE APPLICATION PROCESS TO WIN ONE OF THE 10 HYDROGEN HUBS BEGINS THIS FAL
