Ask Kelly: What's the scorecard line on the scoreboard in this old Pirates photo?
REPORT TONIGHT ON PITTSBUGH’S ACTION NEWS 4 AT 6:00. SEE YOU THEN. KELLY: TODAY’S ASK KELLY QUESTION COMES FROM TIM KELLY OF CASTLE SHANNON, SENDING ME THIS OLD PHOTO OF THE PIRATES TAKING ON THE CUBS FROM FORBES FIELD AND ASKED WHAT THE SCORECARD LINE PERTAINS TO. WE WILL ZOOM IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. IT’S A STRING OF NUMBERS. WELL, TIM, I I GOT WITH THE PIRATES TEAM HISTORIAN TO FIND OUT. BEING HERE AT PNC PARK, WE ARE TWO STADIUMS REMOVED FROM THE TIME PERIOD WHEN THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT FORBES FIELD. >> CLEMENTE WAS COMING UP TO BAT. WE ALSO NOTICED HOW COOL THE UMPIRES LOOKED WITH THEIR TIES AND HOW HOT THEY MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE SUMMERTIME OF JUNE AND JULY BUT THAT’S THE WAY THEY DRESSED. KELLY: JIM TRDINICH IS AN EXPERT ON ALL THINGS PIRATES HISTORY. HE HELPED US DETERMINE WHAT YEAR THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN. >> BY THE PHOTO THAT BEGOT, THAT YOU SHOWED US, IT SAID RON SANTO’S MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT. AND RON WAS A PLAYER WITH THE CHICAGO CUBS. SO, WE USED SOME OF OUR RESOURCES ONLINE TO FIND OUT WHEN HE MADE HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT. AND WE FOUND OUT IT WAS JUNE IN PITTSBURGH AT FORBES FIELD. 26, 1960KELLY: PULLING FROM THAT SAME HISTORICAL ARCHIVE JIM WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE SCORECARD LINE ON THE SCOREBOARD MEANT. HE SHOWS US USING THIS EXAMPLE SCORECARD FROM THE 70’S THAT VISITORS COULD BUY FOR ABOUT A QUARTER. >> YOU WOULD BE PROMPTED TO TURN TO WHATEVER PAGE IN THE SCORECARD TO REFLECT THE NUMBER THAT WOULD BE ON THE SCOREBOARD. IT WAS A 5 DIGIT NUMBER. AND YOU WOULD LOOK TO PAGE 25 IN YOUR SCORECARD. AND THERE WAS A WINNING NUMBER THERE. OH. I’M THE WINNER OF A FREE HOTDOG, FREE BAG OF BEEN -- PEANUTS, OR A TICKET TO AN UPCOMING GAME. SO WE WOULD PROMOTE THE PEOPLE TO COME IN AND GET THEIR SCORECARD FOR A QUARTER 30 CENTS-WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE AND EACH SCORECARD OR SELECT SCORECARDS WOULD BE A WINNING NUMBER. KELLY: SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT. THIS WAS A PRIMITIVE PIRATES PROMOTION. REPLACED TODAY WITH T-SHIRTS AND BOBBLEHEADS. >> TODAY’S GENERATION OF FANS, I DON’T THINK THEY WANT TO LOOK IN THEIR SCORECARDS FOR A FREE HOT DOG. THEY WOULD RATHER MAYBE GET ONE FLUNG TO THEM. OR JUST BUY ONE AT THE CONCESSION STAND. KELLY: JIM ALSO WOULDN’T LET US TALK ABOUT THE PIRATES OF 1960 WITHOUT A VISIT TO THIS SPECIAL SUITE AT PNC PARK. SASSO WE’RE IN THE 1960’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SUITE HERE BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN THAT PHOTO WAS TAKEN. THAT WAS A REALLY GREAT YEAR FOR THE PIRATES. >> ONE OF THE BEST. WE’VE ONLY WON 5 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. AND 1960 WAS ONE OF THEM. THE MIDDLE ONE ACTUALLY. WE WON 2 BEFORE. AND 2 AFTER. KELLY: BUT SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE SEEN ON THE SCOREBOARD DURING THE WORLD SERIES THAT YEAR? >> WE DIDN’T DO THE SCORECARD STUFF DURING THE WORLD SERIES. SO, NOBODY CAME HOME WITH A FREE HOT DOG THAT DAY. KELLY: JUST A WIN. MIKE: QUEST -- >> JUST A WIN. A BIG WIN. [LAUGHS] KELLY: AND UNRELATED TO THE SCORECARD PROMOTION WE ALSO , FOUND SOMETHING REALLY COOL IN THAT 1970’S SCORECARD I WANTED TO SHOW YOU GUYS. >> AND AS YOU FLIP THROUGH YOU , SEE A GREAT CHANNEL 4 ACTION NEWS AD FROM 1975-LED BY BILL HILLGROVE AND DON CANNON AND PAUL LONG AND JOE DENARDO. GREAT AD. KELLY: LOVE IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT WEST AND, TIM. VERY INTERESTING AND NOW WE ALL KNOW. IF THERE IS A QUESTION I CAN GET ANSWERED FOR YOU, LET ME KNOW. YOU CAN LEAVE A VOICE MESSAGE AT THE NUMBER ON YOUR SCREEN. IT’S 412 244 4610. OR YOU CAN JUMP STRAIGHT IN AND SEND ME A VIDEO MESSAGE. YOU CAN SHARE THAT WITH ME IN
